Chris has been involved in coaching since the mid-1980s, when he was a middle manager in business in the UK. He was in the crucible of business coaching, rubbing shoulders with the grandfathers of coaching: Graham Alexander, Tim Gallwey, Myles Downey and many others. Fuelled by his interest and success in coaching rowing (he coached his wife to be a world champion), he started a journey through the coaching landscape which continues today. The writing and research of many others in particular: Tim Gallwey, Charles Handy, Graham Alexander, and the late Sir John Whitmore shape his approach to coaching.

In 2011 he heeded Linda Holbeche’s, formerly Director of Research at Roffey Park, UK, advice: “you have a duty to share your wisdom”. His books include Taking Charge of Your Future (2011), now in its fourth edition, and Taking charge: the Workbook (2019). He has written many articles such as for CEO magazine below and the NZ coaching survey (2018) all of which reach a widespread audience.

New Zealand Survey of Executive Coaching

In its various forms, coaching is widely accepted as one of the most effective development tools for individual and team development and it is used widely across the world as well as in New Zealand. Global surveys of the profession are conducted regularly by various professional bodies. However, it is rare to find any specific data relating to coaching here in New Zealand. During June and July 2018, Winsboroughand I teamed up to conduct the first survey of its kind for 10 years. Our purpose was to understand the current state of coaching in New Zealand and to establish a benchmark position for our coaching community. The survey was specifically designed to be shared with the community as part of our contribution to coaching in New Zealand. (If you do share it, please credit the sources.)
